No scrap left behind

I'm a terrible hoarder. And a major pack rat. I have a really hard time throwing anything out and I keep just about all my scraps of patterned paper and cardstock. The evidence? My bin of scraps.

Scraps

It is getting out of control! I decided to make use of some of them and make a funky journal.

Front

I also hold on to things like the negative piece of chipboard shapes

Chipboard

so I decided to use that for the cover. I painted it with  crackle paint by Ranger, and while it was drying, I pulled a pile of papers from the bin and cut them into 6"x6" pieces to form pages (the size of the chipboard). Some of them were only 6" on one side, so that's the side I used as the edge for binding.

I chose one piece to stick to the inside of the chipboard cover. I punched holes in the covers and the pages. The back cover was made from another piece of chipboard left over from a previous project

Back

I use binder rings to put it all together. One done I went back into my scrap bin and found some smaller scraps that I then added randomly to the pages

Inside

Finally, I decorated the front.

Front_detail

I plan to use this as a sort of inspiration art journal. I will go back in and paint on the pages, add things cut out from magazines etc. and keep it on my scrap desk to draw inspiration from. So see what you can come up with using your scraps! If you clear them out it means space to get new stuff!

It's Officially Spring!

I know we are all looking for warmer temperatures to go along with the budding trees and peeking flowers.  My yard is starting to look beautiful with the pink and fuschia azaleas, bright yellow daffodils and even the sweet purple and lavendar violets trying hard to show their little faces toward the sun.

March_051 With all the lovely colors coming up, I had to turn towards a spring palette to alter my newest piece.  I found a "L" at my local WalMart in the craft close out basket for a dollar.  Being that "L" is my initial, of course I had to bring it home.  I thought I'd share how I made this simple little bit of Spring for my craft room.

What you'll need:
wooden initial (if it is prepainted no worries, if not, you'll need to give it two coats of white acrylic paint)
chosen patterned paper
chipboard
rub on letters
white paint
coordinating ink
embellishments as desired
paint brush
liquid adhesive
strong double stick tape

Instructions:
Turn your paper to the wrong side of the paper lay your letter on it to trace.  Once traced, cut out using a craft knife or scissors.  Set aside.

Once your letter is painted, rough the surface just a bit using an emery board or fine grit sandpaper to accept the adhesive.

Coat the letter with your liquid adhesive.  I like to use an old credit card or similar card (those junk mail ads for more cards do come in hand to use as a spreader for glue) to spread your adhesive evenly across the surface of your letter and carefully place paper on letter right side up.  Using a clean edge (like a bone folder or even a brayer) roll over or smooth over paper to remove any air bubbles.  Set aside to dry.

Cut your chipboard into four small rectangles.  I used three little pieces that came from a package of Fancy Pants chipboard embellishments.  They were the insides of four chipboard bookplates.

While your letter is drying, base coat paint your chipboard rectangles with the white paint.  You can speed up the drying process of your painted chipboard using your heat tool.

Once dry, use your rub ons to spell out your message.  While I love the message "Live Laugh Love",  I chose to change mine around to read "Laugh, Love, Live" to convey the message that to laugh and to love is to live.  The fourth message is self explanatory!

Ink edges of tags with coordinating ink.

Adhere any chosen embellishments to your tags and set aside.

When the paper is dry and firmly affixed to your letter, carefully trim to edges of your letter using a craft knife and a steady hand!

Once the paper has been trimmed, use an emery board to lightly sand the paper to give the illusion of the design having been painted onto the letter rather than paper having been added to the wood.  The paper will fade into the paint rather than having solid edges showing against it.

Adhere your tags and any other embellishments using double stick tape or glue dots.

If desired, finish your project with two coats of matte finish modge podge.  Set aside to dry for 24 hours.

Enjoy!

Materials used for this project that can be found in A Walk Down Memory Lane store include Basic Grey Two Scoops 6x6 paper pad, Basic Grey [Un]dressed  Chipboard Hardware, Gloo, Double Stick Tape

Garden Party Egg Basket

Memorylanebasket Trudee created this adorable little Easter Egg basket using the Spring Morning kit.

She used the Imaginisce For Peep's Sake papers to go around the basket as well as covering the lid and for the tag.

The chipboard flower in the middle of the lid is also from Imaginisce and the flower cardstock sticker is a perfect match for the chipboard piece!

We have add-on papers available, so even if you miss out on this limited kit you can still get most of the pieces to create this adorable little basket.

Magnet Cards by Tricia

Daisy_magnet_card Guest Design Team member Tricia made these ADORABLE magnet cards using our Spring Morning Kit and a few Lizzie Anne Designs Stamps.  She also posted a tutorial on how to make them yourself!

To make the magnet portion of the card, first stamp the solid daisy image from Daisy Dots in green ink on to white cardstock. Then stamp the outline daisy image over the top in brown ink. Cut the flower out. (Note: I actually prefer the two images to not line up. I think it helps give it dimension.)

There are two ways to stick your magnet on the card, which will make the center dot of the flower.Daisy_card_closeup

OPTION ONE: Find a brad with a big head and use it with a paperclip. The brad and the paperclip will help serve as a magnet base so find the biggest one you can! Have the paperclip "hug" the brad and it makes a nice little area for your magnet to stick to. This works pretty well. Dress up the paperclip with a cute piece of ribbon!

OPTION TWO: The other way you can stick your magnet on the flower is by using Basic Grey Magnetic Snaps. Choose a snap with the plus sign. These are really easy to use because you just peel off the sticky backing and then stick it right in the middle of the Daisy cutout. Then just place your magnet on top!

HOW TO MAKE MAGNETS:

The Imaginisce Spring Fling paper was *perfect* for this project because it has a bunch of adorable little spring circles that are the perfect size to punch out with a 1" circle punch.

Magnet_stuff2 Next, use double-sided tape to stick your dot on to a 1" circle magnet. The last step is to stick a Making Memories 1" (XL) Page Pebble on the top, and you're done! Here's a little sample of all the magnets I made...these are all on my fridge. :) Aren't they cute? These make perfect little gifts!Magnets

Thanks for the little tutorial Tricia!!  These are so cute and easy to make!!
