National Macaroon Day

I work at a Bakery and today is National Macaroon Day.  We celebrated at the bakery by giving out some yummy macaroon to the customers :)

National Macaroon Day honors the Macaroon, a flourless cookie. It is popular among the Jewish community, especially during Passover, when Jews can not cook with flour. But, the popularity of the Macaroon doesn't stop there. It is also enjoyed around the world.

Macaroons are made from ground nuts and leavened egg whites. Coconut and potato starch is common in Macaroon recipes. Macaroons were believed to have been first made in an Italian monastery in 1792. While monks are well known for their vows of silence, they just couldn't keep quiet about this tasty treat.

Here is a recipe for you

Macaroons

Ingrediants

2 egg whites

1 pinch salt

1/2 cup white sugar

2 cups sweetened flaked coconut

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Beat together the egg whites with the salt in a small bowl until it forms soft peaks. Add the sugar 1 tablespoon at a time while continuing to beat at high speed until stiff peaks form. Continue to beat until glossy. Fold the coconut into the egg mixture. Drop mixture by the teaspoonful onto the prepared sheet, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for about 12 minutes.

You can check HERE for recipes on making different styles of macaroons

Have a wonderful DAY!!!

Photoshop...

it's complicated, it's amazing, it's frustrating, it's AWESOME. I've been trying to learn photoshop for the past year. it's making me crazy. I use pre-made actions to edit my pictures simply because I don't know how to acheive those results myself. you would think that adobe would have made photoshop a little more user friendly? but alas, no.

this past week I discovered a web blog that has changed my view of photoshop and life forever. it's www.thepioneerwoman.com she talks about photography and many other things, but the photography area was most interesting to me. she has KILLER photoshop skills, and shares them in easy to learn tutorials. I mean, I need the simplist of the simple and that's what she offers. I was able to edit my photos all by myself. in additon, she's put together some AMAZING FREE ACTIONS that you can download. seriously cool stuff. but be advised the tutorials and actions are for photoshop CS2 and CS3 they do not work in Elements. if you've ever thought of upgrading it's worth it!!

have fun!

A Weekend Challenge

Amid all your weekend activities I challenge you to take 30 minutes to an hour to complete a scrapbook layout. One thing I like to do when I want to complete a page quickly, is to use whatever might still be out on my desk and not think too much about finding the "perfect" paper or embellishments. So choose a favourite photo or two, and work with what you have within reach. Chances are if you worked on a project recently you will have items out that are already coordinated! Here is a page I did recently where I did just that.

Add a link to your page in the comments by Monday and I will draw a name for a RAK all the way from France!

Self Portraits

How often do you really scrap yourself?  For me, not very often, especially since I had my little one.    As I was looking through my books I thought I need to do a layout about myself and my love of scrapping!  I wanted to be a bit creative and try something out of my norm on the self portrait.  So I hunted for a room in the house that had good lighting and a mirror close to the window.  I have seen many different angles of shots taken through a mirror!  Soooo this is what I came up with!  I may try taking more pics this way using a different perspective of view.  Possibly holding the camera out and cropping it out of the picture later on.  I urge you to give it a try take some photo's of yourself, scrap them and load them in the TSS Gallery!  Can't  wait to see what you create!  -Angie

National Jelly Bean Day/Color Challenge

National Jelly Bean Day is a time to enjoy gobs and gobs of jelly beans. If you've never enjoyed the multitude of flavors in a box of gourmet jelly beans, then I suggest you head right out to the store and buy some.

Jelly beans date back to at least the 1860's. Advertisements promoted sending jelly beans to Union troops fighting in the Civil War. The original candy maker is unknown but its celebrated every year on April 22nd.

Scrap the Lyrics Blog challenge

I love challenges, and I especially love ones that stretch me creatively. it's no secret that I use song lyrics for page titles and journaling quite often. Right now my son is in a play "midsummer's night's dream" - the rock musical. it's funny, and it's set the music of the Beatles. and at the end of the show, the entire cast sings "With a little help from my friends" and it's so TRUE. so lets celebrate friendship this week, and I challenge you to either use part of the lyrics for the title or..use the lyrics of the song for your journaling. Upload your creation either to the TSS gallery, or your own blog by next Sunday night at midnight and link it in the comments here to win a KILLER RAK!!! and to get you started, here's the link to the words! good luck! (this is also open to the DT too!)

Grabbing a Little Mojo When Yours Has Gone Missing

This week in the mid month newsletter, I published an article about jumpstarting your journaling.  While this is a great method of getting started when your creativity seems to be lacking, some people are just not that inspired by words.  Others need something a little more tangible.

I'm a sketcher.  I love sketches and when I can't get going, sketching layouts and advertisements is a way for me to get my mind moving in the right direction.  You may not be a sketcher, but you likely can accept the challenge.  Let it be a starting place for you!  Choose a sketch randomly. If you have a sketch book such as Becky Fleck's new Page Map book (found HERE in A Walk Down Memory Lane) simply try this.

Since Becky's book contains many different sized layouts and you want this to be an easy start, select the section of the book that has your favorite sized layout to scrap.  You're needing inspiration not more frustration.  Once you've gotten the right section of the book open, close your eyes and randomly select a page and point.  When you open your eyes, the sketch closest to your finger is your starting point.  Challenge yourself to start even if you're not feeling it.  Remember, challenges are meant to stretch you and when you're missing your creativity, doing anything scrapping is stretching, right?

Now get started!  Choose the number of required photos, then select your papers.  Next take some time to consider the necessary embellishments you would like to use and keep going.  Once you've gotten past this part, make yourself sit down and create.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle when you're stuck is just the getting started.  Often if we can just begin those first few steps, the rest falls into place.  If, after you've done this, you're still not there, you can go to the next step, which is challenges.  Challenges are everywhere but finding a challenge that also shows an example is often a great way to get started.  The Challenge Forum on The Scrapbook Site includes challenges by the Design Team each month and includes at least one example to help you.  Randomly select one of the challenges and just GO!  Dive in!  Jump in with both feet and get wet!  Often, making ourselves do this is just the challenge we need.

Now, if all this doesn't work, and you've gone through the magazines and idea books you can get your hands on, and the inspiration gallery isn't doing it for you at The Scrapbook Site, then get dirty!  That's right, get knee and elbow deep into your supplies.  Start organizing your papers, your embellishments, your chipboard, your alphas and your stamps.  Take a good look at your things and see what needs to be cleaned, moved to a better place, sorted by color, purged or maintained.  Sometimes getting into our goodies is all it takes.

I have every faith that one of these methods will work to help you get out of your slump.  If you're having trouble recovering your mojo, give one of them a shot and don't forget to share your results in the gallery!  I know they're going to be wonderful!

Smiles, Lissa
